Two people died after being involved in crash with a big rig on State Route 58 Tuesday. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) the accident occurred April 4th at 11:34 a.m. just west of Kramer Junction in San Bernardino County. The accident temporarily closed State Route Highway 58 for over an hour.
Very few details regarding how the crash occurred were immediately available. According to Officer Roberts with the CHP Barstow station, three people were traveling in a black four-door sedan that was struck by the big rig. Two of the occupants were pronounced dead at the scene once emergency personnel arrived. The third victim sustained major injuries and was airlifted to a trauma center; the current condition of that individual has not been disclosed.
An investigation is still ongoing in order to determine all the factors that contributed to this fatal collision, as well as to establish who was at fault. Although the accident occurred within the San Bernardino County line, Kern County Fire Department was the first to respond and thus assumed command. The identities of everyone involved have not been released. SR 58 was closed in both directions and the highway was re-opened to traffic at about 1:30 p.m.
