A man was killed after a crash with a suspected drunk driver early Thursday morning in Cathedral City. According to Cathedral City Police Department Commander Julio Luna, the incident occurred March 30th around 2:40 a.m. at the intersection of Whispering Palms Trail and McCallum Way. The alleged DUI driver was identified as Jose Bustamante Meza, 19. He was driving a Jeep Cherokee westbound on McCallum Way at an unsafe speed and failed to stop at a stop sign, triggering a crash.
Meza collided with a Ford Mustang traveling north on Whispering Palms Trail. Luna stated that the Jeep struck the passenger side door of the Mustang. A passenger in the Mustang was pronounced dead at the scene. He was later identified as Miguel Villanueva Munguia, 26, of Cathedral City.
An investigation is ongoing to determine all the factors that contributed to this fatal collision. Meza was allegedly found to be under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs at the time of the crash.
