Three unrelated motorcycle crashes occurred Friday morning along Interstate 10 near Thousand Palms. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the first of the collisions was deadly and the driver that struck the victim was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence. Many bikers were traveling in the area due to Arizona’s Bike Week, a motorcycle rally that is taking place in Phoenix this weekend.
The deadly crash occurred around 8 a.m. east of the Bob Hope Drive interchange. The biker sustained critical injuries and was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. The identity of the deceased victim has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
Very few details regarding the other collisions were immediately available. Emergency crews were called to a motorcycle crash on Monroe Street in Indio, the second of three crashes. The collision occurred near the eastbound I-10 off ramp. Two motorcyclists were transported to a hospital, however the extent of their injuries was not disclosed. A third crash occurred very close to this second accident, also on Monroe Street. Injuries were reported in the last collision, but no further details were available.
An investigation is still ongoing in order to determine all the factors that were involved in each of the motorcycle crashes. The names of all the individuals involved were not disclosed. Motorists in the area are advised as it is likely that many more bikers will be heading there.
